Thandi Chuma is a highly accomplished lawyer and human rights advocate with extensive experience in human rights advocacy, legislative drafting, public health, and data protection. Her unique interdisciplinary foundation is anchored by a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree in Public Health and a second master’s degree, an LLM in Disability Rights, from the University of Pretoria. This dual expertise, bridging law and health, has helped her appreciate the complex challenges faced by persons with disabilities, including those with albinism, which often involve human rights abuses and urgent health needs. Her mission is to contribute to the disability rights discourse through advocacy, leadership and impactful scholarship. Her collaboration with the Centre for Human Rights – Disability Rights Unit (University of Pretoria), where she has been invited to moderate several regional workshops, including the 13th Annual Disability Rights Conference in Africa, is but one example of her unwavering commitment to advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities, including persons with albinism.

A notable aspect of her background is her five years of experience as a Legislative Drafter at the Botswana Attorney General’s Chambers. During this time, she played a key role in aligning national legal frameworks with international human rights conventions, particularly the national disability rights legal framework with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). This achievement is foundational, as compliance with the CRPD is vital for eliminating discrimination and ensuring full inclusion. She possesses the unique technical skill to transform advocacy positions into legally sound and enforceable national laws.

Currently, Thandi serves as a Data Protection Officer at the Data Protection Authority in Botswana, where she plays a crucial role in translating the Data Protection Act, a new legislative mandate, into an actionable compliance framework. Her work involves leading nationwide capacity-building workshops, demonstrating her ability to enhance organisational culture and knowledge on critical legal compliance issues.

Thandi is committed to leveraging her expertise in law and policy to advocate for impactful legislative change and advance the rights of persons with disabilities, including persons with albinism.
