Strategic Pillars
Human Rights-Based Advocacy (HRBA)
AAN’s approach is rooted in a Human Rights-Based Advocacy framework that emphasizes the inherent dignity, equality, and rights of every individual. Central to this approach is the empowerment of persons with albinism as rights-holders and the accountability of states and institutions as duty-bearers. AAN applies this philosophy across all initiatives, aligning its efforts with the Sustainable Development Goals to ensure that progress benefits everyone equally. Core principles include inclusive participation, non-discrimination, the rule of law, and transparent access to information.
Capacity Development of Albinism Groups and Human Rights Defenders (HRDs)
AAN strengthens the sustainability and impact of the movement by equipping albinism groups and human rights defenders with the tools and knowledge to lead effective advocacy. This includes HRBA-focused workshops, stakeholder training in key sectors, personalized mentorship, and peer learning through Learning Forums. These initiatives help build resilient local movements capable of driving long-term human rights change.
Collaboration and Partnerships
Recognizing the complexity of the challenges facing persons with albinism, we need strong collaborators. AAN emphasizes collaboration and partnerships with a wide network of allies—from government institutions and academic partners to grassroots organizations and healthcare providers. Both formal and informal partnerships are cultivated, with Learning Forums serving as a platform to foster intersectoral collaboration and amplify shared goals.
Research and Data
Research and data guide and inform AAN’s advocacy, programming, and organizational learning. AAN promotes rigorous and inclusive research, integrates findings across all areas of work, and maintains an extensive multilingual digital library of over 500 resources. This commitment to data ensures accountability, drives innovation, and supports evidence-based responses to the evolving needs of persons with albinism across Africa.
